What Passengers Should Know About The Us Domestic Airlines Regulations For Carry-on Luggage
By Laurie Freeman
According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), passengers flying within the 50 United States are limited to one (1) carry-on luggage. The carry-on luggage must be small enough to store below your seat or in the overhead compartment. In addition to the one (1) carry-on, you may also carry one personal item, for example, a backpack, briefcase, handbag, or laptop. In addition to the one (1) carry-on luggage and one (1) personal item, many airlines may also allow you to carry on other items, for example, diaper bag, approved child safety seat, etc. The carry-on size and weight regulations are listed below which are subject to change without notice.

Airlines | Max. Dimension | Carry-on/Passenger | Max.Weight

AirTran -55 linear inches - 1- +
American - 22” x 14” x 9” - 1 - 40lbs
Continental - 51 linear inches - 1 - 40lbs
Delta - 22” x 14” x 9” - 1 - 40lbs
Northwest - 22” x 14” x 9” - 1 - 40lbs
Southwest - 24” x 15” x 10” - 1 - +
United - 22” x 14” x 9” - 1 - 40lbs
US Airways

- 22” x 14” x 9” - 1 - 40lbs

The Maximum Dimension is the total of the length, width and height in inches for the carry-on luggage. For example, 22” x 14” x 9” is 45 linear inches (22 + 14 + 9 = 45). In some cases, a carry-on luggage may be denied based on how it is shaped even if the dimension and weight are within the regulations because the shape of the carry-on luggage may not allow it to fit in the overhead compartment or below your seat. Domestic airlines do not charge extra for extra carry-on items. On small aircraft, the maximum carry-on luggage and checked luggage weight allowance together is 20lbs.
